What makes a home a safe and stable place to live?
Housing is a concern for all but particularly for low-income families, who struggle to find safe and stable housing.
Is it affordable?
Arkansas families suffer from a shortage of affordable homes. Many families spend more than half of their income on housing.
They sacrifice other essentials (like healthy food and healthcare!) and have increased risks for unstable housing situations like homelessness and evictions.
Does it have things that could make kids sick?
Substandard (or low quality) housing can have any of the following:
structural or maintenance deficiencies
exposed wiring and peeling paint
lack of light, heat, or hot water
These characteristics dramatically affect the social and emotional environment for children!
Unstable living conditions can also affect physical health and growth. Children are more likely to experience food insecurity and consume lower quality food.
How does it affect school?
Poor quality housing affects students' academic ability, lowering school success in core subjects.
By living in substandard housing, children are at a higher risk for emotional and behavioral issues. These issues can manifest as aggression, lying, and deceitfulness.
What can I do to help?
This is why the work of Habitat for Humanity of Central Arkansas is so crucial! By building safe and affordable homes, Habitat targets a critical area for promoting children’s health and well-being.
